This says so much to me about what we are seeking in therapy. Not just the answer. We go to a therapist because we keep failing to do what we want to do. We go to a therapist to help us get past the things that block us from being able to do what we already know we should do. As a therapist, it's my job to SEE the things that are impeding progress, and point you in the direction to move through them.

Two mistakes we make when our life turns hellish: 1) to stop and get stuck; 2) to retreat. A big part of therapy is about keeping going so we come out the other side. Where the therapist comes in is in helping you find the motivation to keep going, and in showing you which direction is progress vs. which direction is retreat. Often, this is the opposite of what you would think. Like Alice Through the Looking Glass, you head towards your goal, but end up going the opposite direction.

Oh, I like this one! So much of what we have to address in therapy is about developing the courage to be ourselves, to take the emotional risks of doing something different from the old way we learned to be. It's about getting out of our comfort zone, and stretching ourselves. I will challenge you to do things you fear.
